THE MORAL OF A GOOD STORY ABOUT NEUTERING

An animal lover contacts us as he is concerned about a female dog, a hunting breed, around nine years old who lives by a person who feeds her but does not officially owns the animal. The dog has a mammary gland tumor and nobody is doing anything about it; the dog is on its own in the street. We agree to examine the dog and this animal lover brings her to us for examination.
It is a big growth but thankfully it has not become ulcerated yet.
We operate the tumor and also neuter the dog.
During surgery we come across the real problem – a big ovarian tumor with a lot of cysts on both the ovaries. They are often the reason for mammary tumors. That is why, whenever we have our neutering campaigns, we never stop explaining to people that neutering doesn’t just take care of overpopulation but also guarantees a longer life.
We have a lot of work to do, especially with the owners of hunting dogs in the region. They still cling to the outdated and incorrect belief that once neutered, a dog is no longer in fit condition. “They can’t hunt,” is what they say. The grim result is that litters of unwanted puppies often end up on the street; or we have cases like our patient, who would be abandoned to a gruesome fate because of the misfortune of having a mammary tumor.

We are glad to see how better the dog feels and she can go back healthy on the street.
