PLUMMETING INSTEAD OF SOARING

13 August 2024

An attentive citizen from the Ano Kaminikia region finds a young, flightless falcon. Without further ado, he brings it to our rescue center in Serres.

The little bird looks healthy, but still needs to be fed for a while. Until we are sure that it can fly and is strong enough for life in the wild, it will stay with us for observation and care.

Another baby bird has apparently also started life by falling instead of flying high; in the same week, another animal friend brings us a young owl.

He discovered the helpless little bird lying on the ground. Like the little falcon, it is unable to fly. The finder tried to reintroduce the owl to the wild. After unsuccessful attempts, he contacted Vets in Action and brought the owlet to the rescue center.

Three days later, the same person turns up on our doorstep with another baby owl! It is much weaker than the first one and completely dehydrated.

As there is no sign of a mother, the two young birds must probably be orphaned siblings. We keep them with us until they start to eat on their own. Later, they will go to the wildlife center in Thessaloniki, where they will be professionally cared for until they are released into the wild.

The cooperation with the wildlife center is very good. Our task is to rescue wild animals in need of help and to provide them with emergency treatment and care. In due course, the wildlife specialists at the center take over the further care and reintegration into their original habitat.

Have a good flight, you three!
