Again and again catfriends contact us when they see sick or injured animals. We also receive such a message for this grey stray cat in South Italy; the Vets in Action immediately set off to pick him up.
We call him Caligula, because his way of walking is similar to that of a Roman emperor and he, despite his young age of only six months, is not afraid to play with the dogs in our shelter. On the contrary!
Our investigation shows that Caligula has severe infection as well as an injury to the right eye and also Coccidia (intestinal parasites).
We give him first anti-inflammatory eyes drops and antibiotic shot. Since the condition of his eye is questionable, we take him to the clinic, where an ophthalmologist assesses the situation. This concludes that fortunately no surgery is required, the eye infection as well as the parasite infestation can be treated by medication
Caligula must stay in the clinic for ten days. Meanwhile we are looking for him a good place, where the treatments can be carried out for a further month. We can not take him in our shelter because a new Italian law forbids to keep dogs and cats in a same shelter. If financially possible, we want therefore to build a small cat shelter for such case
We are very glad that Caligula has recovered so well in the meantime. Completely healthy and full of energy.
Although Caligula can not see 100% anymore from his right eye, it absolutely does not limit his quality of life, and he enjoys the time together with his friends to the fullest. Without the attention of this animal-lover who called us, the lovable and cheerful Caligula would surely have lost his eye.
