In southern Italy, it is not uncommon for people to abandon their sick or old dogs.

This approx. 15 year old Breton Spaniel, which our veterinarians find in the midst of garbage bags, has also become such a throwaway. Because of his advanced age, we name him Nonno.

He can barely stand and is completely incontinent. We bring him to our rescue center where he receives safe shelter and fortifying food.

The first examination shows that Nonno is very weak but has a chance of survival. For two weeks, he receives an infusion twice a day to strengthen his kidneys and liver, as well as restorative supplementary food. Against the leishmaniasis we also give him daily a medicament- this will surely last until the end of the year. And Nonno shows that he is getting better from day to day!

In the meantime he is unrecognizable. Although Nonno can hardly hear and see anymore, he is one of the happiest dogs in our project SUNSET, where he enjoys the life he almost lost a few months ago to the fullest.

In each of our rescue centers, a section is reserved for dogs like Nonno. We call this project SUNSET.  Animals that are old and sick and could not survive without help spend their well-deserved twilight years here.
