Our neutering campaigns are never just that. Every time we have dogs and cats brought in because they have some concerning problems.

One early morning, just before we’re about to start, an old acquaintance of ours, Petar, brings over an old dog. He knows that we don't treat animals of private people, but this one is a street dog that Petar looks after. This happens quite often in Bulgaria when stray animals live close to houses. We know Petar because he often gives shelter and food to elderly dogs, like the lady in our clinic today. She’s been breathing with difficulty for a month and her belly is getting bigger by the day. She also doesn’t move much. We keep her in the clinic for the day and once we’re done with our work, it’s diagnosis time.

Our vets examine the dog thoroughly while asking Petar about any and all details that could help put together a full clinical picture. It is a case of ascites – a condition where fluid collects in the belly – but the underlying causes are numerous. It could be anything from heart problems to cancerous formations. 

The sonographer reveals that the dog’s heart’s right chamber is enlarged. It is one of the defining symptoms of a disease that has become more and more common but we hope against all odds that isn’t our case…

Unfortunately, the test confirms our suspicions: it’s a case of dirofilariasis, commonly known as heartworm disease. It is a serious and potentially fatal disease that causes lasting damage to vital organs such as the heart and the lungs, as well as to arteries. 

The sweet old girl is being discharged. Petar leaves with a list of instructions and a lot of medications. Our patient’s advanced age doesn’t make her prospects too bright but she could still have a chance for a decent quality of life, short as it may be, as long as she is treated diligently. Thankfully, Petar is resolved to do his very best.
