MASS CASTRATION SHOWS EFFECT: GREAT SUCCESS ON THE ISLAND OF SERIFOS/GR
We are the only animal welfare organization committed to helping the strays on the island of Serifos - an important and challenging project.
In 2020, the island was plagued by an uncontrolled proliferation of stray and sometimes sick cats. As Serifos is an island, we can assume that there will hardly be any new arrivals. An island of this size is therefore ideal to illustrate the effectiveness of mass neutering to reduce the proliferation of strays, as the following figures show: Between October 2020 and 2021, we neutered 547 cats, in 2022 there were 356, in 2023 201, in 2024 211. In 2025 there were only 52 - a marked decrease in unneutered cats! This success clearly shows how efficiently a stray cat population can be controlled and stabilized through mass neutering. The mayor has published a message of thanks (see enclosure).
Many tourists also show great appreciation for our work. For example, animal lover Ms. Marcie, who spends a large part of her life on Serifos, appreciates the island precisely because of its commitment to animal welfare. Her experience report provides an insight - available via the link below.
